St. Petersburg College – Shade Sails

Project Scope
  •  Market: Commercial
  •  Seminole, FL
  •  Client: St. Petersburg College
  •  Completion Date: Oct. 2015

What was once a huge, empty circular slab of concrete is now St. Petersburg College’s newest outdoor gathering spot. The Seminole campus now sports a tension shade sail structure with three triangular sails of varying sizes and heights. Support posts are both in the ground surrounding the concrete slab as well as attached to the slab itself. Cable-tension fabric structures such as SPC’s have quickly become the latest must-have additions to any outdoor area.

According to Awning Works representative Brian Cline, “There is no style or shape we can’t achieve!” Customization remains the focus when it comes to design and manufacturing of these structures, from the color of the commercial polyethylene mesh fabric (the most dependable we’ve found), to the structural steel posts that can be custom-built to any height or clearance, to the attachment styles: wall brackets or posts. From residences to resorts and restaurants; from playgrounds and schools to industrial applications, nothing looks more modern than the design of sail shade structures.

Outdoor meeting space before and after. What a difference!

SPC’s project design included three sails attached to structural posts at varied levels between 10 and 13 ft. Layering the height of the sails is for both architectural design as well as function since overlapping sails create more shade.
